Unfinished Business

While at university, I realized I had many unfinished writing projects on my PC hard drive. I was the person James Clear referred to when he said, 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Every article, poem, or play on my computer was incomplete. I told myself that what was worth doing must be done perfectly, and after all, I would eventually complete it one day. Excuses. Now, at 40, I am learning that 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 No matter how well you do something, you will either find people who did it better or convince yourself that your best is not good enough. I read of the photography teacher who grouped his students in two and asked one group to produce as many pictures as possible as they would be graded by the quantities they churned out, while the second group only needed to submit one perfect picture to be graded. In short, quantity versus quality. At the end of the semester, all the best pictures came from th...

If they cannot kill your dream, they cannot kill you!

Image
“Here comes that dreamer. Let’s kill him and throw him into one of these old cisterns; we can say that a vicious animal ate him up. We’ll see what his dreams amount to. ” – Story of Joseph All dreamers have haters. A young Joseph had his brothers, MLK (Jnr.) had Jim Crow, and Mandela had the entire apartheid system. Who is yours? Before you go looking for enemies, hold on a bit. Chances are that they are not really after you. It is the dream in you they are after! They hate you because you dream! Imagine that MLK's speeches were titled, "I have no dreams!" He might have lived longer that way. They want to kill your dream because they cannot imagine a world where a small you can achieve such extravagant dreams. They cannot imagine that you deserve to attain so much that your accomplishments alter the fabric of the world they know. Why should you be allowed to shake them out of their mediocre comfort zone and redefine the meanings of things around them? Why should they let...

Tips on Goalsetting

Image
Make long- and short-term goals; keep them simple, however. Long-term goals may seem complicated to fit in here precisely, but adopting a baby-steps strategy works. These are the short-term goals. Set down motivating goals and put them in a place you can see; ambition won’t become a reality if it remains in your head only. Remember your time frame in a calendar or planner to track progress and minimize procrastination. Adjust your goals as necessary; the same metrics, time constraints, and motivations may not work for every goal you set. Try to make adjustments wherever and whenever you need to. Recognize and reward yourself when you meet a goal. Because sometimes you will need more than just the satisfaction of a well-done job. Develop a roadmap that allows you to reach those goals promptly and calculatedly. Understand your limits; make sure your goals fit your abilities and values. If a task is way beyond your range of capabilities, setting smaller goals along the way might be a good...
